Family Portraits 101: How to Plan Beautiful, Meaningful Photos With Kids

You know that moment when one kid is wearing pajamas as a superhero cape, another is chasing the dog, and the baby is on their third snack of the morning? Yep, that is real life, and it’s exactly why I love capturing family portraits that reflect the beauty in the chaos.

As a Raleigh-based family photographer (and a mama to my own wild crew!), I’m passionate about helping families document the real stuff. The giggles. The cuddles. The messes. And while family portraits might sound like something formal or posed, the truth is, they can be incredibly fun, playful, and meaningful.

If you’re dreaming up your next session, or wondering what family portraits can really look like with kids in tow, I’m here to show you it’s absolutely possible to create images that feel magical. This guide walks you through everything you need to plan meaningful, beautiful family portraits, from timing and location to prep and what comes after your session.

And hey, if you ever want to chat through your ideas or start planning your own session, I’d love to connect. Whether we’re shooting in your cozy home or your favorite park, I’m here to make the whole process feel easy and fun.

Let’s get into it!

Why Family Portraits Matter (More Than You Think)

Family portraits aren’t just about getting a "good" picture. They’re about creating visual memories that freeze a moment in time, a season that will pass faster than we think. Your toddler’s gap toothed grin, your baby’s chubby fingers, the way your kids snuggle into your lap, those are the details that make your story yours.

And when you invest in capturing those memories, you're not just giving yourself something to treasure today. You're creating a legacy for your kids. You're saying, "You belong. This is our story."

How Often Should You Schedule Family Portraits?

You don’t need to wait for a major milestone to book a session. Honestly? The everyday seasons are just as worthy of documenting.

A good rule of thumb is at least once a year. Kids grow so fast, and even six months can bring huge changes! Some families book seasonal sessions to document each stage more closely, especially in the early years.

And if you’ve been putting it off because you’re waiting for the "perfect time" when the house is clean, everyone’s well rested, you’ve lost the baby weight, please hear me when I say: now is the perfect time.

When Is the Best Time for Family Portraits?

Mornings = Magic

I always recommend morning sessions, especially with little ones. They’re more rested, full of energy, and not yet affected by hunger or nap time moods. Plus, morning light is beautifully soft and natural!

In Home Sessions Work Year Round

If the weather feels unpredictable (hello, North Carolina summers!), in home sessions are a perfect choice. Not only are they temperature controlled, but they also offer beautiful light, especially in winter when bare trees let in more sunshine.

And honestly? There’s something really special about capturing your family in your own space. The place where life actually happens.

Where Should You Take Your Family Portraits?

You don’t need to scout out the most scenic field or book a fancy location. Some of the most meaningful images happen right in your living room, backyard, or at a park you visit every weekend.

Why I Love In Home Sessions

  • Your kids are more comfortable (and excited!) in their own environment

  • We can incorporate your favorite activities: reading books, baking, snuggling on the couch

  • You don’t have to pack a thing or worry about the weather

What to Wear for Family Portraits

Let’s take the stress out of what to wear. You do NOT need to buy a whole new wardrobe. The goal is to coordinate, not match. Think earthy neutrals, cozy textures, and layers you can add or remove. Keep it simple, comfortable, and true to your family’s vibe.

A few tips:

  • Start with Mama’s outfit first. Pick something you love and feel amazing in.

  • Dress kids in soft, flexible clothes they can move in.

  • Avoid logos, neon, or anything too distracting.

How to Prepare for a Session (Without the Stress)

Family portraits should be fun! My sessions are all about movement, connection, and laughter. So you don’t need a pep talk or Pinterest worthy plan.

If you’re wondering what to expect, think relaxed and easygoing. We’ll follow your family’s rhythm, not a strict shot list.

Here’s how to keep it light:

  • Let your kids know a friend is coming over to play and take pictures

  • Make sure everyone has eaten and is comfy

  • Bring water, snacks, a lovey or two, and a change of clothes just in case

If someone needs a break during the session? We take it. The goal is connection, not perfection.

After the Session: What to Do With Your Family Portraits

You booked the session. You showed up with open hearts. You played, snuggled, laughed, and made magic together. Now what?

This is where the story continues, because your family portraits aren’t just images to save on a phone or computer. They’re memories meant to be seen, held, and passed down. This is your family’s story, and it deserves to live beyond the screen.

One of the most meaningful things you can do after your session is turn those images into family heirlooms, something tangible that holds your memories for years (and generations!) to come. Whether it’s a linen bound album you flip through on Sunday mornings or framed prints your kids see on the wall every day, these pieces become part of your daily life, and part of your legacy.

There are so many beautiful ways to display your photos, from gallery walls and photo ledges to coffee table books and gifts for loved ones. Whatever your style, the key is choosing pieces that feel like home and reflect the warmth and personality of your family.

Let’s Document Your Family’s Story

Family portraits don’t need to be stiff, posed, or stressful. They can be full of laughter, movement, love, and real connection. My hope is that you walk away from your session not only with photos you love but memories you’re grateful to have made.
