A Simple Milestone Checklist for Baby’s First Year

You know how everyone tells you that baby’s first year flies by, and you kind of smile and nod but don’t fully believe it yet? And then suddenly your tiny newborn is giggling, sitting up, and somehow turning one? It really does go that fast. That’s exactly why having a simple milestone checklist can make such a difference as you soak in this season of motherhood.

As a Raleigh-based family photographer and a mama myself, I’ve seen just how quickly these moments come and go. The little stretches, the sleepy snuggles, the wobbly sitting, the first steps. They all deserve to be remembered in a way that feels joyful and real.

If you’re wondering when to schedule sessions or how to plan ahead without feeling overwhelmed, this milestone checklist is for you. I’ll walk you through each stage so you can capture your baby’s first year in a way that feels easy, meaningful, and true to your family.

And if you want someone to guide you through it all, I’d love to connect and help you plan every step so it feels simple and fun from beginning to end.

Why Baby’s First Year Flies By Faster Than You Think

There’s something about that first year that feels both incredibly fast and somehow timeless all at once. One day you’re learning how to swaddle, and the next you’re cheering as your baby takes their first steps across the living room.

Every stage is so different, and that’s why having a milestone checklist matters. It helps you slow down and notice the changes as they’re happening, not just after they’ve passed.

Because it’s not just about the big milestones. It’s the way your baby curls into you, the way they look at you like you’re their whole world, the way your family grows into this new rhythm together. These are the moments that feel fleeting, yet timeless all at once.

When to Schedule Newborn Photos

Those early weeks are tender, emotional, and yes, a little bit of a blur. But they’re also incredibly special.

Newborn photos typically happen within the first 2 to 3 weeks after baby arrives. This is when they’re still sleepy, curled up, and adjusting to the world outside the womb.

These sessions aren’t about perfection. They’re about connection. Feeding breaks, diaper changes, snuggles on the couch, siblings peeking in. It’s your real life, just gently documented.

And mama, you belong in these photos too. I know it can feel like a lot in those early days, but I promise you’ll treasure those images more than anything.

Milestone Checklist: The 3–4 Month Stage

This stage is such a hidden gem.

Around 3 to 4 months, your baby starts making eye contact, smiling intentionally, and showing those first glimpses of personality. It’s the beginning of interaction, and it’s so, so sweet.

Adding this to your milestone checklist gives you a chance to capture:

  • Big gummy smiles

  • Curious little expressions

  • The way they light up when they see you

It’s less about posing and more about connection. Talking, laughing, holding them close. These sessions are full of joy and discovery.

Milestone Checklist: 6–9 Months of Baby Magic

If I had to pick one stage that parents fall in love with all over again, it’s this one.

Between 6 and 9 months, babies are often sitting up, giggling constantly, and full of expression. This part of your milestone checklist is all about personality. and those meaningful little moments that make you stop and soak it all in.

Think:

  • Belly laughs

  • Tiny hands reaching for you

  • Wobbly sitting and proud little grins

This is also when movement starts to come into play, which makes sessions feel playful and full of energy. It’s such a fun time to document because your baby is truly engaging with the world around them.

Milestone Checklist: First Steps and One Year Milestones

And just like that, your baby is turning one.

This part of your milestone checklist is filled with movement, celebration, and so much personality. Whether your little one is crawling, cruising, or taking those first steps, it’s all worth capturing.

One year sessions can include:

  • First steps or standing moments

  • Playful interaction with you

  • A simple cake smash or birthday celebration

But here’s the thing. It doesn’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful. Some of the most beautiful one year sessions happen right at home, where your baby feels most comfortable and free to explore.

Should You Book a Baby’s First Year Photography Membership?

If you’re thinking, “I don’t want to miss any of this,” you’re not alone.

That’s exactly why so many families choose a baby’s first year membership. It takes the pressure off remembering when to book and makes the whole experience feel seamless.

With a membership, everything is planned out for you. You get to show up, love on your baby, and trust that these moments are being documented along the way.

It’s one of the most meaningful ways to tell your baby’s first year story from beginning to end.

How to Plan Ahead So You Don’t Miss These Moments

Here’s my biggest tip. Start early.

The best way to use this milestone checklist is to think about your baby’s first year before it even begins or right after they arrive. Booking ahead ensures you don’t miss those fleeting stages.

A few simple ways to plan:

  • Book your newborn session during pregnancy

  • Choose a membership or bundle for the full year

  • Keep things simple and flexible so sessions feel stress free

You don’t need a perfect house or perfectly behaved baby. You just need to show up and be present with your people.
