You know that stretch of early spring in Raleigh when the trees are just starting to bud, the air still has a little chill, and your kids are begging to run barefoot the second the sun peeks out? That in between season is pure magic. And it’s one of my favourite times for spring family photos.

Why Early Spring in Raleigh Is Perfect for Spring Family Photos

Early spring in Raleigh is so underrated. Before everything turns bright green, we get the dreamiest neutral backdrop. Soft browns, muted grass, budding trees, and the prettiest golden light.

For spring family photos, this is actually a gift. You’re not competing with bold greenery yet, which means your outfits and your connection really shine. Whether we’re shooting in North Hills, Hayes Barton, Five Points, or your own backyard, early spring gives us space for soft, romantic color palettes that photograph beautifully.

And bonus, it’s usually cooler. No one is sweaty. No one is melting. Everyone is a little more comfortable and ready to play.

The Best Color Palettes for Spring Family Photos

When planning spring family photos, color matters more than you think. And here’s my biggest tip for early spring in North Carolina.

Stay away from greens.

I know it sounds counterintuitive for spring, but early spring landscapes are already muted green and brown. If everyone shows up in green, you’ll blend right in.

Instead, lean into:

  • Soft pinks

  • Dusty blues

  • Creams and ivories

  • Warm neutrals

  • Light tan and soft beige

These tones feel timeless and photograph so beautifully against early spring scenery. Neutrals will always win. They don’t date your images, and they keep the focus where it belongs, on your faces and connection.

If you’re unsure, start with one soft color for mom and build around that with complementary neutrals for everyone else.

How to Layer for Tricky North Carolina Spring Weather

If you’ve lived through a Raleigh spring, you know exactly what to expect. It can be 45 degrees in the morning and 70 by lunch.

Layering is key for comfortable spring family photos.

Think:

  • Lightweight cardigans

  • Knit sweaters

  • Denim jackets

  • Flowy dusters

  • Textured wraps

Layers add visual interest and movement to your photos, and they’re practical. We can always take a layer off if it warms up. I’d much rather you feel cozy and confident than distracted by being cold.

Texture is your friend here. Knits, linen, soft cotton, and subtle embroidery all photograph beautifully and add depth without overwhelming the image.

Coordinating for Spring Family Photos Without Matching

Let’s retire the everyone in the exact same white shirt and jeans look. For beautiful, modern spring family photos, we’re going for coordination, not duplication.

Start with a base palette of three to four complementary colors, then mix solids with subtle patterns and soft textures for depth. Keep the overall feel cohesive but not identical so everyone looks connected without being overly matched.

Think mom in a soft pink dress, dad in a cream henley and light denim, one child in dusty blue, and another in a gentle floral that pulls it all together. It feels natural, effortless, and perfectly suited for joyful family photos.

What Moms Should Wear for Spring Family Photos

Mama, this part is for you.

You deserve to feel beautiful and comfortable in your spring family photos. You’ll be sitting on the ground, lifting babies, chasing toddlers, and soaking up snuggles. So whatever you wear needs to move with you.

I always suggest:

  • Flowy dresses that allow for movement

  • Soft fabrics that feel good on your skin

  • Something you can comfortably sit and play in

And here’s the best part. I have a full client wardrobe for moms in every season of life. Whether you’re newly postpartum, pregnant, or just wanting something that fits beautifully without the stress of shopping, I’ve pulled together pieces that photograph like a dream.

You don’t have to squeeze into something that doesn’t feel like you. I’ve got you covered.

Dressing Toddlers and Kids for Movement and Play

Spring family photos with little ones should feel joyful and free, not fussy.

For babies and toddlers:

  • Onesies are amazing if you don’t want little bellies popping out

  • Neutral diaper covers are a must, especially under dresses

  • For little girls in dresses, neutral undies with soft spandex shorts underneath keep everything covered while they twirl and climb

The goal is freedom. Kids should be able to run, spin, and snuggle without anyone adjusting outfits every two minutes.

Soft, neutral shoes always photograph best. Or barefoot if the weather allows. Avoid athletic sneakers with bright colors or bold logos. They tend to pull the eye away from faces.

Shoes, Textures, and Final Details That Elevate Spring Family Photos

The little details make a big difference in spring family photos.

Choose:

  • Neutral sandals or simple leather shoes

  • Soft knits, lace, linen, and cotton

  • Delicate florals instead of bold prints

And don’t forget about hair and accessories. A simple bow, a textured headband, or layered necklaces can add personality without overwhelming the look.

Think elevated everyday. Not formal. Not stiff. Just a slightly polished version of your real life.
